Anthony AzekwohThe Adventures of Lagos Man
The Adventures of Lagos Man

Ayra

A young woman turns back over a bare shoulder, and the gele she wears is the largest thing in the frame, violet wound on violet, wide enough to take the room before she does. Azekwoh drops the ground to oxblood and near black so the only light in the painting is on her: a small gold star at the ear, a spark of gold at the shoulder, one thin gold line entering from the top of the canvas. The mouth is barely open. The look is neither an invitation nor a defence. It is the half-second before somebody decides what they are going to say. She has not said it yet.
